Where did you grow up?: Pueblo, Colorado. (about 130 miles south of Denver)
How long have you been working with children/teaching?: 11 years
What led you to a career in education?: I was a stay at home mom who did not want to go back to banking when I returned to the workforce. The director of my kids preschool told me she thought I would be a good teacher. I signed up for classes the next day and have not looked back! (Thanks Mrs. Geyer!)
What is your favorite thing about working at DCP?: The AMAZING staff! The INCREDIBLE families! The way we do Play Based learning! The Cooperative model! Honestly, I cannot choose on thing over another. DCP is such a unique place, and everything overlaps so much. This place has become my second home and I am proud and happy to be part of such a life changing community!
What is your favorite thing to do in the classroom?: Anything sensory related! Cooking. Singing. Reading. I love it all. But really, if you know me, you know I can be found playing in anything that is sticky, gooey, drippy or clumpy! (and it will probably be doused with something that smells good!)
What are your hobbies or passions outside of DCP?: My family is first. I truly love being the mom of teen aged people and my husband is one of the coolest people I know! I love to read and always have a book going. When I have all the time in the world and no pressure, I also love to cook. (but let’s face it, that almost never happens!) My husband is an Intern Pastor at a church in the area and we are passionate about building community and relationships (sound anything like DCP?) so we devote much of our time to that outside of work hours.
Where can we find you in Denver (favorite spots/hangouts/places to visit): Usually during the school year you can find us in some gymnasium or on the bleachers in some random football stadium. We tend to follow our kids! And if it is a home game we are likely to be found running concessions. It’s a great way to get to know more of the families at the school and parents of our kids friends. (And Mr. Miss Jade has been known to ask people to sing for their food instead of pay. We laugh a TON!)
Tell us about your family: I have an amazing husband, Mark. (AKA Mr. Miss Jade). We just celebrated our 24th anniversary. He works at a Jesuit High School in town, and is a part time Intern Pastor. He hopes to be licensed next year. Together we have two kids. Caleb is 18 and headed off to college this year to study veterinary medicine. (the kid is so much smarter than I am!) We will miss him but are so excited to see him begin to pursue his dream! Rebekah is 15 and a sophomore in high school. She is involved in every aspect of student life (so it seems) Volleyball, student government, AP classes…you name it, she does it, or wants to!
What did you want to be when you grew up?: A mom and a teacher. (that worked out well!)
What do you remember most about being a young child?: Family. Most of what we did centered around our extended family.
What was your favorite thing to do as a child?: Two things come to mind immediately; Play and “Go!” Haha! My parents basement was unfinished. It was a big open space with cool to the touch cement floors and exposed floor joists up above. I spent many many hours down there roller skating, riding my inch worm (anyone remember those gems from the 70’s?) and playing “little house on the prairie”, “Farm”, “Orphanage” (I think this started after seeing Annie!) and “Library” I was deep in imaginative play most of the time. AND, if anyone said the word “Go”, I would run to get my sweater and my hand bag (You never know when you will need your bag!) and be ready to go…wherever. I just loved that time out with a grown up.
Anything else you want to add about yourself: I love to laugh. I try to find the joy in any situation and lead from that place. I am passionate about this DCP community and how we do what we do! I’m honored to part of such an amazing staff! Thank you for sharing your lives with me and for trusting me with your babies!
